Helen Cass
CRAFT: PAPER SCULPTURE
REGION: Herefordshire, West Midlands
Helen Cass is a British contemporary artist whose practice explores the relationship between line, repetition and surface. Working primarily with paper and ink, she creates intricate, quietly compelling works through processes of drawing, folding, scoring, weaving and stitching.
Her approach is rooted in the rhythms of labour and repetition, drawing inspiration from the domestic and agricultural traditions of her family history. Having grown up in a farming community in the Welsh Marches, Helen's work reflects a longstanding connection to the landscape, memory and the passage of time.
Using simple materials and painstaking techniques, she builds layers of marks and lines, where subtle variations and imperfections become integral to the finished composition. Her process is both physical and meditative, transforming repetitive gestures into richly textured abstract works.
Helen studied Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, and completed an MA in Fine Art at Aberystwyth University. She was awarded the Drawing Prize at the Royal West of England Academy Open Exhibition in 2023 and elected an RWA Academician in 2025.
